Description

Orchard Cottage is a farmhouse that has been converted into a house and surgery. It dates from the early 18th century and has been altered and extended over time. The building is constructed of handmade red brick in an irregular bond, featuring some burnt headers, and has a red tile roof. It has a rectangular single-depth plan with modern additions on the left end and an extension on the right-hand end.

The cottage is two storeys high and has three bays, which are mostly symmetrical except for an added dormer. It has a plinth, a three-course band that is broken between the second and third bays, and a vertical joint between the first and second bays. Each floor contains three small two-light casement windows, with those on the ground floor set under segmental relieving arches. A large gabled dormer has been added slightly to the right of centre. The building features gable chimneys.

The entrance is now located in a single-storey addition at the left end, which is not of special interest. There is also a short single-storey extension at the right-hand end, which includes a two-light casement window and a ridge chimney, and this has been further extended. The rear of the building is rendered and has similar window arrangements along with a central glazed door.

Inside, there are two rooms on the ground floor of unequal size, featuring a chamfered spine beam and a large brick fireplace at each end, which has been partly restored.
