7.9.51 Orchard Cottage

II

Farmhouse, now house and surgery. Early C18, altered and extended. Handmade red brick in irregular bond, with some burnt headers, red tile roof. Rectangular single-depth plan with modern additions to left end and extension at right-hand end. Two storeys and 3 bays, symmetrical except for an added dormer, with a plinth, a 3-course band (broken between the 2nd and 3rd bays), and a vertical joint between the 1st and 2nd bays; each floor has 3 small 2-light casement windows, those at ground floor under segmental relieving arches, and a large gabled dormer has been added slightly right of centre. Gable chimneys. The entrance is now in a single-storey addition at the left end, which is not of special interest. The short single-storey extension at the right-hand end, with a 2-light casement and a ridge chimney, has been further extended. The rear, which is rendered, has similar fenestration and a glazed door in the centre. Interior: 2 rooms at ground floor, of unequal size, with a chamfered spine-beam, and a large brick fireplace at each end (partly restored).
