Description
The Dog Inn is a public house that originated around 1400, with significant alterations from the 15th century and a date of 1661 marking further development. It features a timber frame that is rendered and extended with red and blue brick, topped by a plain tiled roof. The building has two storeys, with a lower range to the right that includes an attic. The left side of the structure jetties on brackets and is adorned with a scalloped barge board, while there are two gabled dormers on the right and stacks at the center and end right.
On the first floor, there is a tripartite glazing bar sash window, and on the ground floor to the left, a tripartite wooden casement window, along with two leaded wooden casements to the right. The central entrance features a half-glazed door, with a boarded door to the right, both set within simple architraves and accessed by four steps with swept and wreathed iron rails.
At the rear, there is an 18th-century stable block that stands two storeys high, complete with a loft door, a glazing bar sash window, and two boarded doors along with a wooden casement on the ground floor. Inside, the right-hand section has a plain crown post roof, while the left features a fine moulded crown post. The Dog Inn is part of 'Canons' Row' at Wingham College, which suffered severe fire damage in 1660, leading to the 1661 date on the gable, although much of the building predates this event. Like the nearby Red Lion, it served as the Sessions House in the 18th and 19th centuries.
