Description

Vine Garden Cottage is a house dating from the 18th century, located on the south side of The Street in Northbourne. It is constructed of red brick with a plain tiled roof and features two storeys and a basement, topped with a hipped roof and chimney stacks at the rear. The front has two segmental-headed glazing bar sash windows on each floor, and to the left, there is a six-panel door, with the top two panels glazed, set in a pilaster surround with three steps and chain rails. To the right of the door, there is an opening for the basement.

To the right of the main house is a lower two-storey range that has two glazing bar sashes on the first floor and one on the ground floor, along with a kneelered parapet gable on the right return. A courtyard wall extends approximately 50 metres to the west along the roadside. This wall is primarily built in English Bond on a flint base and is of 17th-century origin, although it has been repaired and extended at the western end, particularly with 19th-century brick. The wall ends with a swept gateway featuring stone-capped piers. To the left of the house is a one-storey extension with a panelled door, and beyond that is a 15-metre long wall, about six feet high, made of red brick on a stone base, which includes a boarded door.
