Description
The Retreat is a building dating from around 1830, located on Sea Street in Herne Bay. It is two storeys high and finished in stucco. The structure features a central portion flanked by two wings. The centre section has three windows and slightly projects forward. Above it, there is a cornice and parapet made up of alternating solid panels and open balustrading. The first floor has an iron balcony with a heart and honeysuckle motif, interpreted freely. The windows are surrounded by moulded architraves, with sash windows on the ground floor that retain their glazing bars, and French windows on the first floor. The wings have a cornice and blocking course at the top. Each wing has a blocked window space on the ground floor and a panel on the first floor that imitates a Venetian shutter. The facade features a solid Doric porch in the centre, flanked by pilasters.
