Description

The Bridge is a historically significant structure that crosses the canalised overflow stream from a reservoir built around 1200 by the Bishop of Winchester, Godfrey de Lucy, to provide water for navigation on the River Itchen. The bridge dates from the 14th century, with early 19th-century alterations. The north face features a single pointed arch made of cut stone with rebated roussoirs, and there is a stepped buttress on the west side. The lower walls are constructed of stone rubble up to road level, while above this is a brick parapet capped with weathered original stone. The south face was widened in the later period, incorporating brick walling and a parapet. The Bridge is also designated as a Scheduled Ancient Monument.
