Description
The barn at Poplars Farm is a building dating from the early 18th century. It features a weatherboarded timber frame set on a red brick plinth laid in English bond. The roof is made of corrugated iron, with half-hipped ends and a hipped porch.
The barn has a five-bay layout with an aisle on the west side and opposing cart entrances in the central bay, although the west entrance has been blocked. The east front showcases full-height double doors leading to the cart entrance. The rear of the barn has a roof that extends over the aisle to low eaves, and there is a blocked cart entrance at the center with a hipped roof.
Inside, the barn consists of five bays and an aisle on the west side. The arcade and wall posts feature cut jowls and slightly curved braces connecting to the tie beams and arcade plates. The tie-beam trusses include raking struts that clasp the purlins, with short straight wind-braces and complete common-rafter couples. The wall framing lacks a mid-rail and has large studs, with some timber being reused. A later loft floor has been inserted into the north bay.
