Description

BEDFIELD LONG GREEN TM 26 NW

2/28 Barn 40m south of Poplar 29/7/55 Farmhouse (formerly listed with Poplar Farmhouse) )

GV II

Barn. Late C16. Timber framed, the walls mainly clad in tarred corrugated iron, with a similar roof cladding. Interior. The frame is in 5 quite narrow bays, with largely intact studding, full-height except in the gable ends and opposite the original cart entrance where there are mid rails. Arched wall bracing. The 2 bays at the east end were originally partitioned off and floored for use as stabling; the 2nd bay retains C16 plain joists, set flat; evidence for diamond-mullioned openings in this section. The cart entrance was in the centre of the 3 open bays, on the south side. One open tie beam retains arched braces to the wallposts, the remainder have later knees. Roof has clasped and butt purlins, with incomplete 2-way wind bracing to the butt purlins. Brick threshing floor.
