Description
This barn, located 40 meters south of Poplar Farmhouse, dates from the late 16th century. It is timber framed, with the walls mostly covered in tarred corrugated iron, which is also used for the roof. The interior features a frame with five narrow bays, showcasing largely intact studding that extends full height, except in the gable ends and opposite the original cart entrance, where mid rails are present. There is arched wall bracing throughout. The two bays at the east end were originally separated and floored for stabling; the second bay still has 16th-century plain joists set flat and shows evidence of diamond-mullioned openings. The cart entrance is centrally located in the three open bays on the south side. One open tie beam retains arched braces to the wall posts, while the others have later knee braces. The roof includes clasped and butt purlins, with incomplete two-way wind bracing to the butt purlins. The barn also features a brick threshing floor.
