Description

Ebenezer Cottage is a former farmhouse dating from around 1500, with a mid-20th century renovation and a rear addition. The building is timber framed and plastered, featuring a half-hipped roof. It has a three-cell, cross-entry layout and is two storeys high. The front has three windows fitted with mid-20th century standard single-pane casements. A mid-20th century plastered gabled porch with a panelled door is also present. There is an internal stack and a 19th-century external gable stack to the right.

Inside, the cottage has been modernised. The upper floor showcases widely spaced studding, which is mainly exposed. There is part of one original first-floor diamond-mullioned window in the hall chamber, along with evidence of others. The two-bay hall features what appears to be an original upper floor with plain joists set flat. An open truss over the hall chamber has a cambered tie beam with solid braces to the wallposts, although one end has been cut through for a side passage. The roof is constructed with coupled rafters and low purlins to support the hip, and all the roof timbers show signs of being sooted.

The current stack is a later addition, and the previous heating arrangement is unclear. The parlour ceiling includes a large trimmed opening just beyond the stack, likely for smoke passage. A tie beam above this opening was removed during the mid-20th century renovation and may have been part of a smoke hood. In the upper end wall of the hall, there is a single central post that extends through the present ceiling and is likely morticed into another tie beam at a slightly higher level, although the purpose of this arrangement is not clear.
