Description
The barn located immediately west of Bedfield Lodge dates from the late 16th century. It is timber framed and primarily covered in tarred weatherboarding, with the south gable end featuring corrugated iron cladding. The roof is made of corrugated asbestos sheeting. Inside, the barn has an intact four-bay frame, with the cart entrance situated in the second bay from the south. Most of the wall braces are reverse-curved, and there are down braces on each side of the cart entrance. Three bays contain small diamond-mullioned openings just below the wallplate, one of which retains its original mullions; these openings likely served for ventilation as there is no evidence of an original upper floor, although the frame at the north end is mostly hidden. The barn also features original braces connecting the tie beams to the wallposts, with one pair including struts. The roof structure is a queen-post design with a ridge piece.
