Description
The Bedfield War Memorial is a war memorial erected in 1920 by Charles Mee, following the First World War, with an additional inscription added after the Second World War. It is carved from Cornish granite and is located within the churchyard of the Church of St Nicholas, immediately to the east of the chancel.
The memorial features a Celtic cross set atop a trapezoidal plinth and a two-stepped base, standing approximately 2.5 meters high. It is surrounded by stone paving and gravel within a square stone kerb, which is accessible via a short path. The front (south) face of the plinth bears an inscription in leaded lettering that reads: "LEST WE FORGET/ IN MEMORY OF THOSE WHO FELL/ IN THE GREAT WAR/ 1914–1919/ (10 NAMES)." The upper step of the base includes the inscription: "1939 (NAME) 1945." The west face of the plinth is inscribed with the words: "UNITY IS STRENGTH/ TO/ THE HONOUR OF THE MEN OF/ BEDFIELD/ WHO GAVE THEIR SERVICE TO/ KING AND COUNTRY." Lastly, the east face of the plinth has the inscription: "MAKE THEM/ TO BE NUMBERED/ WITH THY SAINTS."
