Description

Tavern Farmhouse, latterly a public house (closed in 1962), was built in the early to mid-17th century, with development occurring in two phases. In the 19th century, the main range was extended slightly to the right. The house is timber-framed and has a roughcast render and a thatched roof. It originally comprised a two-story, two-cell main range, with a later one-and-a-half-story wing set forward to the left. The house now has metal casement windows with small panes. A mid-20th century curved porch, fully enclosed with glazed doors and windows, is located in the angle between the two ranges. The main range features an end chimney at the junction with the later wing, with a 19th-century red brick shaft. A 19th-century gable stack is situated to the right of the main range. The interior has been modernised, but shows evidence of original features. These include exposed studding with reverse-curved braces, and traces of former diamond-mullioned upper windows. The ground floor of both sections has plain joists, set flat, and clasped purlin roofs, with some re-used, sooted rafters.
