Description

Cable Cottages is a former farmhouse that has been converted into two dwellings. It dates from the early 17th century, with a likely 19th-century addition on the left side. The building is timber framed, featuring a roughcast-rendered facade while the rest is plastered. The roof is primarily pantiled, with concrete tiles on the front slope of the main range and clay tiles elsewhere. The structure is designed in a 3-cell, lobby entry style and has two storeys plus an attic.

There are three windows, which are late 19th-century four-paned sashes, along with two mid-20th-century metal casement windows on the ground floor. The doorway of No. 2, leading into the main range, features a half-glazed four-panel door with a gabled hood supported by curved brackets, decorative bargeboards, and a spike finial. The building has an internal stack with a rebuilt shaft and another stack against the left gable end of the main range. The left-hand addition includes one bay of four-paned sash windows and a doorway with a four-panel door and a matching gabled hood.

Inside No. 2, which includes the hall and parlour cells of the farmhouse, there is exposed first-floor studding with reverse-curved braces, a chamfered-joist ceiling in the hall, and a wind-braced clasped purlin roof with concealed rafters. The staircase is a newel type. The interior of No. 1 has not been examined.
