Description

Abbey Farmhouse is a former farmhouse that has been converted into three dwellings. It dates back to the 16th century or earlier, featuring a hall range with a later 16th-century parlour addition to the east and a 17th-century dairy wing to the northwest. The building is timber framed and roughcast rendered, topped with a roof of concrete pantiles. It stands two storeys high, with the parlour block jettied to the north on original brackets. The windows are mainly 20th-century casements, mostly of standard metal-framed type, and there are 20th-century doors.

At the junction of the hall and parlour, there is a stack with a heavy axial shaft. The lower part of the shaft is original and features oblong panels on the north and south sides, with the northern panel being larger. Each panel has a moulded border, originally enhanced with an inner surround of dentils.

Inside, the parlour has been Victorianised, with the main components of the frame only exposed on the upper floor. The central tie beam has mortices for large braces. The adjacent two bays of the hall range have some framing exposed on the upper floor, with some components showing signs of soot. In the south wall, near the stack, there is a window dating from around 1600 with ovolo mullions. Part of an arched stuccoed fireplace is visible in a cupboard, with the remainder filled in by a 19th-century fireplace. There is also a newel stair, but the rest of the interior and all of the roof space have not been examined.
