Description
Summerseat is a house with a core dating from the late 15th century to early 16th century, featuring later 17th century and possibly early 18th century in-line additions at each end, creating a long five-cell range. The building was renovated in the mid-20th century. It is timber framed and rendered, with a thatched roof and stands at one and a half storeys. The house has various casement windows, mostly from the 20th century, with diamond-leaded glass, and four gabled two-light dormers. A 20th-century one-storey addition is set forward to the right and includes a side doorway with a plank door. There are internal and external stacks at the right gable end, both topped with sawtooth-capped 19th-century shafts. At the rear, there is a full-length pantiled brick lean-to.
Inside, the center section, which was likely part of an open hall, features substantial full-height studding and remnants of two diamond-mullioned windows that seem to extend through the upper floor level. The floor joists are set flat, with those in the hall being chamfered. The 17th-century additions have square or on-edge oak joists and regular primary-braced studding. Evidence suggests that the current stack is an 18th-century rebuild, with the previous stack likely only heating the hall. Most of the roof timbers are concealed.
