Description

The barn and attached shelter shed at Poplar Farm date from the 18th century, although the barn has been significantly rebuilt in the mid to late 19th century. The structure features a timber frame that is mostly from the 18th century, with 19th to 20th century weatherboard cladding and a 19th century brick plinth. The roof is made of slate and has raised eaves. The barn consists of four bays, with a cart entry located to the left of the center and a board door adjacent to the left. There are also 20th century garage doors inserted into the left bay.

Inside, the 18th century frame remains largely intact in the rear and left gable walls, showcasing mid-rails, down bracing, and some original studs. The tiebeams are braced, with some braces being curved. Many of the timbers are reused from the 16th and 17th centuries. The front wall and right gable have been extensively reworked. The roof structure from the 19th century includes raking queen struts, collars, clasped purlins, and a ridgeboard.

The shelter shed, which is from the mid to late 19th century, is positioned against the gable wall of the barn. Its other rear and end walls are made of 19th century brick. The front is open and supported by timber posts, and it has a hipped slate roof with machine-cut king-post trusses. Inside, there are rough wooden feeding troughs and low mangers. An extension at the front of the shelter is not of special interest. This building is included for its group value with the Stable at Poplar Farm.
