Description
This barn, located to the south of the farmhouse at Paradise Farm, dates to the late 17th or early 18th century, with alterations made in the 20th century. It is timber-framed and originally clad in weatherboard, though some of this has been replaced. The barn sits on a tall red-brick plinth and has a half-hipped roof covered in plain tiles from the early 20th century. It has three bays, including a rear aisle and two cart entries facing the front, one of which is protected by a pentice. A rear cart entry has been boarded up, with the surrounding walling replaced with 20th-century brick and plastic sheeting. A 19th-century animal shed projects from the left bay; it is timber-framed with weatherboard cladding and a plain-tile roof, and has three bays including a central entrance. The barn's interior features a complete timber frame of substantial timber, with carpenters' numerals scribed on the timbers. Notable features include unjowelled wall posts with arch braces to the eaves plates, an arcade plate and ties from the rear, central wall posts to the rear eaves plate, a mid-rail, intermediate posts and studs creating vertical panels, collared queen-post roof trusses, clasped through purlins, large-scantling principal rafters reducing in thickness above the collars, square-section rafters, intermediate collars, and straight wind braces. The animal shed also has collared queen-post roof trusses, clasped purlins and a plank ridge.
