Description
Paradise Cottages is a row of three cottages located on the west side of The Street in Waltham St Lawrence. They date from the late 16th century, with some parts rebuilt and refaced in the late 18th century, and alterations made in the 20th century. The cottages feature a combination of timber framing with painted brick infill and areas of painted brick. They have an old tiled gabled roof, which is higher over cottages 2 and 3. The row includes one and a half storeys and two storeys, with four chimneys topped with clay pots.
The front of the building facing the road shows cottage number 1 on the left, which has two framed bays with exposed timber framing. It includes a gabled dormer with a two-light casement window and a four-light casement window on the ground floor, both from the 19th century and featuring glazing bars. There is also a plain 20th-century entrance door to the right. Cottages 2 and 3 consist of four bays with 18th and 19th-century casement windows that also have glazing bars. The entrance door to cottage 2 is located to the left of the center, while the entrance to cottage 3 is at the rear. The timber framing is exposed on the north and south gables.
