Description

Paradise House is a large house located on the west side of The Street in Waltham St Lawrence. It was built in the early 18th century, extended in the late 18th century, and altered in the 20th century. The house is constructed of brick and features an old tile hipped roof. Originally, it had a rectangular plan with three by two bays, but it has since been enlarged to include two additional bays. The building has two storeys and is topped by two chimneys with offset heads and clay pots.

The road front, which faces east, has three bays and includes a first-floor string course. The central sash window is flanked by two tripartite sash windows, all set within moulded architrave surrounds. On the ground floor, there are three taller windows. The entrance front, facing south, consists of four bays and features a semi-circular-headed window with an iron balcony in the centre on the first floor. Below this is a 20th-century entrance door, which has a moulded architrave surround and a moulded hood supported by shaped brackets. On either side of the door are small two-light casement windows with glazing bars. To the left on the ground floor are two sash windows with segmental-arched heads. A small adjoining service cottage and a converted barn to the southwest are noted as being of no special interest.
