Description

The Dell is a house located on Hertingfordbury Road in Hertford. It was built in the early 18th century and has been altered and extended in the 19th and 20th centuries. The building features colourwashed red brick in Flemish bond, with old tile roofs over a brick dentil cornice, and has an 'M' shaped gabled roof at each end. The central part of the house has three bays, with single bay extensions added to both the left and right sides in the 19th century. There is also a rear range that extends across the full width of the building but is of lesser depth.

The exterior of the house is two storeys high. On the first floor, there are five widely spaced sash windows with divided glazing, with three of them nearly flush-set and recessed at the left and right ends. The ground floor features two large canted bay windows from the mid-19th century, also with divided glazing. The front is stuccoed and has a bold cyma reversa moulded cornice with a flush blocking course above. Flanking the doorway is an early 19th-century lattice trellised porch supported by slim octagonal wooden columns, topped with an open trellised pediment and a low-pitched old tiled roof.

The west flank elevation is plastered at the gable ends and has recessed 19th-century sash windows on both the first and ground floors to the right. On the ground floor to the left, there are early 19th-century French windows with margin glazing. The rear elevation features a central two-storey projecting timber-framed and plastered gabled stair turret, with five sash windows on the first floor, some of which have small panes. The ground floor includes a large lean-to extension and a conservatory with windows that have Gothick lancet traceried heads. The interior has not been inspected.
