TL3012SE HERTINGFORDBURY ROAD 817-1/23/331 (East side) Hertingfordbury Hertingfordbury Corn Mill

Corn mill, vacant at time of inspection. Mid C19, altered early C20. Yellow-grey Cambridge gault brick, Flemish bond. Old tiled roofs with corbel band cornices and verges. L-plan with mill race through centre. EXTERIOR: 2 and 3 storeys and attics. First floor has 5 bays, loft doors in bays 1 and 3 windows in bays 2, 4, 5, all beneath double header segmental arches; ground floor has cast-iron windows in bays 1 and 4, doors in bays 2 and 5. Central hoist loft carried on timber brackets, weatherboarded over timber framing with gabled old tile roof. INTERIOR: cast-iron structure with columns with bell caps and flanges, 7-bay north wing. Mill wheel in situ at time of inspection, horizontal drive, with geared controls above, drier and dresser in situ, corn bins and shutes in loft, heavy queen strut and purlin roof. HISTORICAL NOTE: Hertingfordbury Mill was operational until 1933 but is now used only for storage.
