Description
Hertingfordbury Corn Mill is a corn mill located on Hertingfordbury Road in Hertford. It dates from the mid-19th century and underwent alterations in the early 20th century. The building is constructed of yellow-grey Cambridge gault brick in Flemish bond and features old tiled roofs with corbel band cornices and verges. It has an L-plan layout with a mill race running through the center.
The exterior consists of two and three storeys with attics. The first floor has five bays, with loft doors in the first and third bays and windows in the second, fourth, and fifth bays, all set beneath double header segmental arches. The ground floor features cast-iron windows in the first and fourth bays, and doors in the second and fifth bays. A central hoist loft is supported by timber brackets and is weatherboarded over timber framing, topped with a gabled old tile roof.
Inside, the mill has a cast-iron structure with columns that have bell caps and flanges, and a seven-bay north wing. At the time of inspection, the mill wheel was still in place, featuring a horizontal drive with geared controls above. There are also a drier and dresser, corn bins, and chutes in the loft, along with a heavy queen strut and purlin roof.
Hertingfordbury Mill was operational until 1933, but it is currently used only for storage.
