Description
No. 8 College Street is a late 18th-century building that stands three storeys tall. It features painted brickwork and a brick dentil cornice, topped with an old tile roof. The façade includes two windows and a door with a moulded surround, supported by two fluted brackets and adorned with a delicate moulded dentil cornice above. There is an angular bay window on the first floor, while the ground floor has a modern window. The building has sash windows with glazing bars and a panelled door with panelled reveals. Above the door, there is a plaque commemorating Jane Austen, who spent the last weeks of her life here before her death on 8th July 1817. All the listed buildings on College Street are part of a group. This listing was enhanced in 2017 to mark the bicentenary of Jane Austen's death.
