Description
This barn, located immediately northeast of Zionshill Farmhouse, dates from the 18th century. It is timber-framed and covered in later weatherboarding, with a half-hipped roof made of corrugated steel sheets. The barn has three bays and features a cart entrance at the center of the west side.
Inside, the structure includes wall-posts with cut jowls and curved braces supporting the cambered tie-beams. The roof is constructed with queen-struts to collars, clasped purlins, straight wind-braces, common rafters, and an intact ridge-board. Long projecting pegs are used at the joints. The wall framing consists of tall studs and long straight diagonal braces, although the south end wall framing has been replaced, and the lower wall framing of the center bay on the east side has been removed. Additionally, extra tie-beams have been inserted in bays one and three, with struts to the purlins.
