Description
Manor House occupies the site of a Knights Hospitallers Preceptory from the mid-12th century to 1536. The house largely dates to the 15th century, with alterations in the 18th century and minor additions in the mid-19th century. The main walls are of brick in a header bond, featuring rubbed flat arches and blue panels between windows, with corner pilasters and a plinth. Other walls are of Flemish and English bond and are finished with a stucco parapet featuring a pierced balustrade of oval strapwork above a moulded stone cornice. The roof is hipped and slate-covered, with a tile roof to the lower wings.
The symmetrical west front is two storeys and has an attic, with three windows. Dormers, dating to the 19th century, have pediments, and the main windows are sash windows set in reveals. A Victorian porch, in a matching style, has a stucco balustered parapet, moulded cornice, corner pilasters, a plinth, a panelled front door, and side sashes. Behind the west front is a long, two-storey service wing extending to the south, with a tile roof, brick walls of English and Flemish bond, and ending in two wide cambered carriage arches, one of which is now fitted.
The interior of the service wing features timber framing from an earlier date. The north elevation of the main block is symmetrical, two storeys high and has an attic, with similar detailing to the west front and three pilasters. Set back to the rear, as a lower two-storey wing, is the surviving part of the medieval buildings - the kitchen block - with a massive chimney breast. The north elevation of this section has a Venetian window above two sash windows.
