Description

Fir Hill is a house from the mid-18th century, with mid-19th century additions that created a lower service wing. The walls are made of brick in Flemish bond, featuring a plinth, a first-floor band, rubbed flat arches, a parapet with stone coping, and a stucco modillion cornice, while the service wing is plain. The roof is hipped and tiled, with flat-roofed dormers.

The symmetrical west front has full-height splayed bays on either side, and the building stands two storeys and an attic high, with three windows on the first floor and one on the second. The south wing, added in the 19th century, is two storeys tall with two windows on the first floor and one on the second. The windows are Victorian sashes set in reveals. The entrance features a stucco doorcase in the Tuscan or plain Doric Order, complete with a pediment, pilasters, architrave, and a six-panelled door (two of which are glazed). The slightly projecting south end of the wing includes a ground-floor Venetian window.

The rear (east) elevation of the main block is also symmetrical, consisting of two storeys, an attic, and a basement with five windows, showcasing similar architectural details and a simpler doorway with a pediment on brackets and a half-glazed door. A flight of stone steps, built in the mid-19th century and richly ornamented in a classical style, leads from the doorway and turns in both directions at mid-level, featuring bulbous piers and a pierced parapet. The service wing is less regular in design, with the ground-floor portion dating from the earlier period. Minor extensions are present at both the north and south ends. An incised brick in the north chimney is marked with "I.M. 1767."
