Description
Bulford Barns is a barn located on Bulford Mill Lane, dating from around 1700. At the time of the survey in September 1986, it was undergoing conversion into a dwelling. The barn is timber framed and covered with weatherboarding, with a roof made of corrugated asbestos. It features five bays arranged in a northwest-southeast direction, with a two-bay midstrey on the northeast side. The main frame consists of unjowled posts that are jointed and pegged, along with girts and primary braces. The wallplates have face-halved and bladed scarfs. The arched braces supporting the tiebeams have been replaced with bolted knees. A notable transitional feature is the presence of a heavy stud in the middle of each bay at both levels, which is tenoned and pegged to the horizontal members; the other studs are lighter, tenoned but not pegged, and side-nailed where they meet the braces. The roof is constructed with joggled butt-purlins and was originally half-hipped, but is now gabled. At the northwest end, the hip rafters and collar are intact, while at the southeast end, only the hip-collar remains.
