Description

The North Barn at Upper Ibthorpe Farm incorporates elements from the 17th century and later. It is framed in oak and clad in weatherboarding and corrugated metal sheeting. The barn is situated at the north of the courtyard associated with Upper Ibthorpe Farmhouse and is a rectangular range oriented east-west. A flat-roofed porch projects from the south side, abutting a later building.

The barn is four and a half bays long and has a pitched roof with a hip above the half-bay on the east end, and a half hip to the west. Some original horizontal weatherboarding remains beneath the eaves, with the remainder of the structure clad in corrugated metal sheeting, including the roof. Openings are present on the north elevation in the sides of the second and third bays.

Internally, the timber frame is exposed, and the main structure comprises four queen post trusses with braces and clasped purlins. The wall framing is a separate construction phase, with slender studs and shores of varying styles, some timbers being irregular. The westernmost bay and the half bay at the east end appear to be later additions and have ridge pieces at the roof apex. Rafter styles and patina vary, with some bays aligning with peg holes on the purlins. Internal partitions divide the barn into two bays at the east and two and a half bays at the west. Fragments of a brick threshing floor are found within the western bays.
