Description
Briar Cottage is a Grade II listed house located on the south side of Winchester Road in Kings Somborne. Originally built in the 17th century, it was later encased in 18th-century brick and extended in the early 19th and 20th centuries. The structure features a timber frame that is covered with rendered brick, with the older sections having a thatched roof, while the newer parts are covered with slate.
The building is two stories tall and consists of a three-bay section from the 17th century, with two additional bays from the 18th century added to the left. There are also 20th-century extensions at the rear and to the right end, which include two more bays. The 17th-century section has a gabled rendered porch located to the left of center, featuring a 20th-century door. There are six 20th-century three-light leaded casement windows, and the roof has a ridge piece and a stack at each end. The left and right additions have similar one, two, and three-light casements, with a door on the left side.
Inside, the 17th-century part retains a floor, a large brick fireplace, and a notable 17th-century queen-post roof. The building is included for its group value.
