Description
This is a 15th-century barn located 40 meters east of Berry Court Farmhouse. It features a timber frame with a low flint wall and stone dressings, topped by an old plain tile roof. The barn is aisled all around and consists of five bays, with a flint plinth that has a moulded stone offset and stone quoins at the corners and between the bays.
On the farmyard side, there is a projecting central midstray porch with similar walls, flanked by weatherboarded gables on either side of a large double door opening, and a half-hipped roof. The roof itself is hipped and includes a few roof lights.
Inside, the barn has tall posts resting on padstones, cambered tiebeams supported by tall queen posts, and large curved braces connecting the posts to the tiebeams, with smaller braces leading to the aisle plates. There are ties from the tops of the walls to the posts, with struts supporting the lower part of the rafters. Above and below the aisle plate, there are two sets of purlins, with curved braces extending from both sides of each rafter. This structural detail is also present on the hips, and the porch features a queen strut truss with three sets of purlins and windbraces extending from the truss to the uppermost purlins.
