Description

The Farmhouse is a Grade II listed building located at Sole Hill Farm in Sherfield English. It likely originated in the 17th century, with a later 18th-century brick exterior. The farmhouse is constructed of red brick, primarily laid in English bond, and features a peg tiled half-hipped roof with rebuilt brick chimneystacks.

The south elevation has three bays and an off-centre porch that has been blocked. The ground floor casement windows, which are modern replacements, are topped with segmental arches made of headers. There is a modern porch to the left (west) that is of no particular interest. The first floor has straight-headed windows set beneath a dragon-tooth cornice at the eaves. The rear (north) elevation includes a plinth and shows evidence of a former doorway. The east gable end retains a line of hung slates, which may cover part of the original timber frame. There are later outbuildings at the west end.

The interior has not been inspected but is reported to retain a stop-chamfered beam in the ground floor room to the right of the lobby entry, along with some original fabric in other areas and some re-used early joinery. The chimney flue has several phases of brickwork, with probable 17th-century fabric on the ground floor and later 18th-century openings on the first floor.

This farmhouse is noted for being a substantially intact early modern structure with various phases of construction. It exemplifies the typical plan, construction, and materials of Hampshire farm buildings and retains some original ancillary buildings, including a barn.
