Description

The Cottage at Dairy Farm is a former farmhouse, likely built in the second half of the 17th century, with later alterations. It is timber framed with painted brick infill and has a hipped thatch roof made of combed wheat reed over the original long straw. There is a brick ridge stack situated between the right-hand bays. The cottage features a baffle-entry plan and is one and a half storeys tall with three bays, although the right bay may have been added later.

The structure has a square panelled timber frame set on a brick plinth, with straight braces connecting the wall posts to the eaves plate. On the right side of the central bay, there is a board door framed in chamfered wood, which is sheltered by a 19th or early 20th-century gablet brick porch. A 20th-century lean-to porch and side-outshut are present on the left side. The ground floor has three 20th-century windows, while the upper floor features small-pane wooden casements of two lights under the swept thatch in the left bays. At the rear, the left bay includes an old board door with cover strips, and there is an external stack with a lean-to on the right.

Inside, the central room contains a brick inglenook fireplace with a bread oven, a winder stair beside a bracketed mantelshelf, and a bench. The large-scantling spine beam has a deep chamfer and stepped stops, with a similar beam in the left bay. Throughout the cottage, there are board doors and wide floorboards leading to the first floor. The jowelled heads of the wall posts, straight windbraces, purlins, tie-beams, and principal rafters are all visible. At the time of inspection on July 2, 1991, the cottage was noted to be in a state of disrepair.
