Description
The barn adjoining Skidmore Cottages is a mid-18th century threshing barn. It features a five-bay timber frame with a double cart entrance. The barn has a brick base and timber cladding, while the east wall is made of brick up to the eaves level with a timber gable. The west end has been replaced with a concrete block wall that abuts a shed, which is not of special interest. The roof has tiles on the south roadside elevation and corrugated sheeting on the opposite slope.
Inside, the roof structure consists of four queen post trusses with trenched purlins, curved wind braces, and common rafters, all of which appear to be original. The tie beams have straight and pegged braces connecting to the principal wall posts, which have cut jowls and rest on a cill plate atop the brick plinth. The wall framing on the south side includes studs with diagonal down braces from each principal post, while the north wall features a substantial wall plate with curved braces connecting to the posts.
This barn is of special interest due to its 18th-century timber framing and five-bay design with a double cart entrance. Despite some structural modifications, it retains much of its original timber framing and layout. The barn also has group value with the nearby listed Skidmore Cottages.
