Description

Oriel Cottage is a Grade II listed building located on Ship Lane in Farnborough. Originally a late medieval wood-framed structure, it has been mainly transformed into an early 19th-century 'Cottage Orne' designed in a full-dress Tudor style. The cottage is two storeys high and features a rear projection and a two-storey porch at the front. It has a steep red tile roof with gables and plain barge-boards supported by corner brackets. The building includes massive coupled diagonal chimney stacks set on a rectangular base, which has a recessed panel in the middle stage.

The exterior is primarily constructed of red brick with some blue headers, arranged mainly in English bond, while part of the first floor is half-timbered. Architectural details include hoodmoulds, tiled weathering, and a gabled feature above some window openings, along with a ground floor bay and a first floor oriel. The porch features a four-centred arch in the ground floor brickwork, with an upper stage in close framing, topped by a gable that jetties out and is adorned with barge boards. The cottage has casement windows set in recessed solid woodwork, featuring arched lights, and studded doors at the front and sides.
