Description
Empress Cottages, located on Ship Lane in Farnborough, were built around 1840 and are designed in the Gothic Revival style with a strong Jacobean influence. The building consists of an irregular block that is two storeys tall, featuring some ground floor outshots. It has a steep red tile roof adorned with multiple gables and prominent chimney stacks with raking offsets.
The exterior is constructed from red brick in Monk bond above a projecting band at the first floor, with Flemish bond below. The windows are casements, some of which include mullions and transoms, set in chamfered reveals with tile cills; many retain their original diamond leaded lights. The ground floor is enhanced by open porches, an elaborate hood over one window, and bays that have tiled roofing. The cottages occupy a prominent corner site at the junction with Highgate Lane.
