Description

This is a range of cottages located at 88-98 Christchurch Road, primarily serving as shops today, with the exception of number 88. The buildings date from the late 18th century to the early 19th century, with alterations made in the 19th and 20th centuries. They are constructed of roughcast cob and brick, topped with thatch roofs.

Numbers 88 and 90 are likely early 19th century, featuring two storeys and two bays each, set on a plinth. The left-hand cottage (number 88) has a four-panel door accessed by two steps and three irregular two-light casement windows. Number 90 has an early 20th-century shop front and a glazed door beneath a fascia that extends to the right-hand shops. Above is a blank panel and a two-light window.

The next two cottages to the right are probably 18th century, each one and a half storeys high with two bays and a higher ridge. They also have early 20th-century shop fronts with shop windows on either side of a central door, and three eyebrow dormers with two-light casements. The roofs of these four cottages are hipped, with chimney stacks on the left-hand end and on the ridge between the right-hand cottages. To the left end, there is a low two-storey early 19th-century extension featuring a sash window and a low-pitched half-hipped tile roof.
