Description
No 1 (W Ayles & Son) is a house that has been converted into a shop. It has a core that dates back to the 16th century, was refronted in the 18th century, and altered in the early 20th century. The building features a timber-frame core that is encased in painted brick, topped with an old plain tile roof. It is two storeys high and has three bays, with a projecting crosswing at one end.
The front of the building has a modern shop front that includes a double plate-glass window on the left half, while the right half features plate glass windows on either side of a recessed doorway leading into the right projecting wing bay. A fascia runs across the entire front. On the first floor, there are two 18th-century flush-frame 16-pane sash windows under rubbed arches on the left and center, and an early 19th-century segmental head 16-pane sash window in the right bay. The roof overhangs and extends in front of the gable of the crosswing, which has a higher ridge and 19th-century curly bargeboards. Inside, the first floor reveals uncovered timber-frame elements, likely from the 16th century.
