Description
Penny's is a shop and house built in the mid-18th century, with alterations made in the late 18th century. It features a painted brick front and an old plain tile roof. The building is two storeys high and has a three-bay range facing the street, along with a two-storey, two-bay link wing at the back that includes a 19th-century outshot. This leads to a tall, two-storey, three-bay house from the early 18th century with a hip roof.
The front of the building has a late 18th-century shop front on the ground floor. To the left, there is a service door with six panels beneath a semi-circular fanlight, which is adorned with iron radiating fanlights and cast lead decorations in rectangular panels. A double half-glazed door is located between two large flat segmental bow windows, each consisting of 11 by 4 panes. Each window section is flanked by slender engaged and reeded Doric columns that support an entablature featuring a moulded, dentilled, and modillioned cornice.
On the first floor, there are three 19th-century four-pane sash windows, with the centre window blocked and painted over, all set within an architrave under a rubbed arch with raised keys. The eaves are dentilled, and there is a 19th-century two-light gabled dormer in the centre of the roof.
