Description

The Star Inn and the adjoining house are located on the north side of Market Place in Ringwood. The buildings date from the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries and feature a mix of rendered surfaces and tiled roofs. The 19th-century rectangular range faces the street, while the 17th-century lobby entry range forms the rear wing of the Star Inn.

The structure has two storeys, with the street front displaying a grooved giant pilaster at the left corner. The ground floor of the inn has a four-pane sash window on the left and a part-glazed door with a plain architrave surround on the right. Number 8 has a modern shopfront. Above, there is another four-pane sash window for the inn, a blank tablet in the centre, and a tripartite sash for Number 8. The roof has a hip to the left and features a panelled brick stack.

The rear wing extends along the lane and includes two twelve-pane sashes below, one glazed door, and three eight-pane sashes above. There is a blocked doorway with a segmental head in the lobby entry position, a central brick stack with weathering, a tall lateral stack to the right, and a gable stack to the left. The two-cell lobby entry plan remains, featuring a massive stack and an additional room to the left, which may be an 18th-century extension. The interior has been remodelled for a bar, with some roughly chamfered beams and joists over the bar, as well as back-to-back fireplaces.

The street range and Number 8 are included for their group value.
