Description

A row of early 19th century terraced houses, numbered 5 to 57, on the west side of Southampton Road. The houses are built of red brick, with numbers 11-15, 21-27, 33, 51 and 57 having painted brickwork. Numbers 7 to 35 have tiled roofs, while numbers 37 to 57 are covered with slate. The houses are generally two storeys with attic dormers, though number 25 has two storeys and a basement with a slightly higher roof, and number 57 is three storeys. Each house has a single window, featuring sash windows with glazing bars. Number 33 has a modern shop front. Number 37 has a modern ground floor bay window, and number 43 retains a former shop window with a square bay featuring glazing bars, set under a cornice and flanked by two round-arched doorways. Number 45 has a large iron balcony across the first floor. Most of the houses have round-arched doorways with fanlights, although some have stuccoed tympana. Numbers 49 to 55 have rectangular fanlights, whereas numbers 39 and 41 lack fanlights, but number 39 features a moulded architrave. Buildings 5 to 57 form a group of group value.
