Description

The main block of Fordingbridge Infirmary, originally a cottage hospital, was built in 1895 and completed in 1897. It is constructed of brick with a slate roof and features a symmetrical design with two storeys and fifteen bays. The fourth bay from each end and the three central bays project, with the central bay projecting further forward and topped with a tower.

The front facade includes a central projecting porch with a round-headed archway featuring keyblocks. There is a band at the first floor level, which has three tall windows, the center one being larger. Above this, a second floor band acts as a cornice supported by corner pilasters. A central niche with an apron is located above, and the second floor has sloping swan-neck sides. The third floor features three recessed panels of moulded brickwork tablets displaying a crest and the date, along with two square windows and corner pilasters.

The gable is pedimented and includes a clock face and an ornate cupola. Each bay on either side has corner pilasters, bands between the floors, segmental-headed windows with aprons, and half a Dutch gable above. The other bays have similar windows, except for the projecting bays, which contain narrow paired windows with pedimented gables. There are stacks at each end, above the projecting bays and on either side of the central projection.
