Description

Eggars Cottages are two cottages that were originally one unit, dating from the 15th century, with early and mid-19th century alterations. They are built of painted brick and feature a tile roof. The structure has a late medieval timber frame with four bays, and the front (north) elevation is two storeys high with three windows. The roof is steep and hipped, extending at both ends to lower eaves above the outshots, and there is a catslide roof at the rear with three gabled dormers. The front has three steep gablets above the upper windows and a shafted stack. The framing is massive and exposed, with painted brick infill. The east outshot is boarded, while the west is of painted brickwork. The windows include Victorian coupled lights on the first floor and various 20th-century windows on the ground floor. There is a half-timbered gabled porch, which is wide and off-centre, featuring entrances on either side in a mid-19th century Tudor style. The interior structure reveals that the original form was a two-bay hall with a smoke bay at the west end. Historical records suggest that the cottages were constructed between 1492 and 1514 by William Kerven.
