Description
Barford Mill and Millhouse is a former flock mill with an adjoining house, dating from the 18th century. The buildings are constructed of stone and tile. The mill is positioned at right angles to the stream, built into the steep valley side on its west side. To the east, there is a narrow water channel, and beyond that is the eastern embankment which supports the mill dam. North of the mill, on its west side, is a wing that may be the first house, and attached to it is a late 18th-century extension of the dwelling, culminating in a single-storey 20th-century service block, creating an L-shaped layout.
The mill itself features a two-storey timber frame resting on a basement that is accessible from the north side. It has a half-hipped roof with an exposed frame and rubble stone infill, which was formerly boarded. The basement walls are made of stone with brick dressings. The building displays an irregular pattern of 20th-century leaded oak frames and plain board doors. The house portion is also two storeys high with a two-window facade. It has a plain roof with brick dentil eaves. The stone rubble next to the mill contrasts with the later attachment, which is built of ironstone with brick dressings, featuring quoins, cambered openings, a first-floor band, and a plinth. The windows are leaded oak casements, and there is one boarded door, while the former central doorway has been partly filled with a window.
