Description

Yafford Mill is a former mill and mill house, dating to the 18th century, with earlier origins. The mill house is situated to the left and is constructed of red brick, with a single course of headers laid between rows of stretchers. It has a tiled roof and a brick chimneystack. The two-window facade features casement windows and a 19th-century lean-to porch. The mill building is of ironstone rubble with brick dressings; the gable end is brick, incorporating both Flemish and English bond. A blocked opening is visible on the first floor, and the ground floor has a single casement window. A simple doorcase is concealed by stone brick and a thatched lean-to. A 20th-century replacement overshot water wheel is located to the right. Attached to the right-hand side is a probable 17th-century section of stone wall, being the remaining evidence of an earlier mill. A 19th-century projecting section of brick and ironstone rubble with a slate roof is located on the left-hand side, featuring two doors. The roof, which extends above both the house and the mill, has chamfered staggered purlins, along with diagonal tension braces and collar beams. The interior of the mill retains an iron pit wheel, a renewed wooden great spur wheel, a wallower, a wooden upright shaft, and 19th-century wheat and barley shutes.
