Description

Milestone 42 is a Grade II listed milestone dating from 1824. It is a square white stone pillar set diagonally, featuring a sloping triangular cut on the front that transitions into an upper rounded front, which is finished at the top as a half-dome. The pillar has incised lettering and numbers: the half-dome displays "Parish of Basing," the rounded front shows "LONDON," the triangle is marked with "42," the north-east facet indicates "Basingstoke 3 1/2," the north-west facet reads "Hartford Bridge 6¼," and the south-west facet notes "42 miles Hyde Park Corner."
