Description

Priory Farmhouse is a historic building that dates from the 12th, 17th, and 19th centuries. It incorporates the remains of the Priory of St Mary, which was an alien priory of the Order of Tiron, founded around 1130 and dissolved in 1391. The original monastic layout included small buildings arranged in a simple pattern, with a church featuring an aisleless nave and chancel to the north of the cloisters, an eastern range containing the chapter house and dormitory, and additional southern and western ranges. Most of these structures have been replaced by the farmhouse's garden, with the boundary wall made of flint that includes squared stonework and a later brick weathered top, varying in thickness.

The north and eastern wall of the western range, dating from the 14th century, is now part of the farmhouse and is also constructed of flint. It features two pointed stone arches, a small upper stone-framed window, and some stonework. The farmhouse itself is L-shaped and has two storeys, with the northern section built from the monastic walling. Above this section, the north gable displays exposed timber-framing. The west wall of the house, dating from the 18th century, has three windows and is made of red brick in Flemish bond, with blue headers and cambered openings. The southern part of the house, built in the early 19th century, has a symmetrical front with three windows and a west side with two windows, also in red brick with Flemish bond, cambered openings, and a plinth. There is a brick porch with a pointed arch leading to the doorway. The roofing is primarily old tiles, mostly gabled but hipped at the outer angle.
