Description

Chequer is a large 18th-century house, dating from 1578. It is three storeys high and has four windows. The facade is red brick with alternating grey headers, set on a stone base. Red brick pilasters with grey headers are located at the sides of the house. A similar parapet tops the building, with a stone cornice above and a string course below. The windows are set within stone surrounds, and their glazing bars are missing. A porch features Doric columns and an entablature with a moulded architrave and cornice, decorated with modillions. The east front, which faces the garden, has an early 19th-century balcony with a hood. The building is part of a group value context with La Rochelle, Chequer, Cannon House, The Vicarage & Nos 16 to 19 (consec).
