Description

The Mermaid Hotel, located at 1578 Mermaid Street, is a late 15th-century timber-framed building that features an inner courtyard. Beneath the hotel, there is a 13th-century stone vaulted cellar. The oldest part of the structure is the south front, which has two storeys and an attic, with five windows. The first floor is studded and overhangs at the ends of the floor joists and bressumer. The westernmost bay of the first floor extends over the entrance to the stable yard, supported by three wooden posts and three beams, with curved brackets connecting them. Beyond this yard, the hotel continues into another building that has two windows and one dormer. The north front of this section has been refaced with brick, although the upright beams and curved braces have been retained. Most of the hotel’s windows are modern, and it has a tiled roof. The doorway features carved jambs, and the ground floor infill at the entrance to the stable yard is made of brick rather than plaster. The first floor overhangs on all sides, and there is a gable at the east end of the north front. Inside, the hotel contains Tudor fireplaces and panelling. To the east, the hotel extends into an 18th-century red brick building that has two storeys and an attic, with two windows and two dormers. All the listed buildings on Mermaid Street are part of a group.
