Description
The Cock Hotel is a hotel located on High Street, with parts dating from the 16th to 17th centuries and the remainder from the late 18th to early 19th centuries, although it has been altered. The 16th to 17th century section features a timber frame with herringbone brick infill visible at the rear, and the front is covered in whitewashed roughcast and render. The ground floor and the right end have been rebuilt in brick. The building has an old tile roof with brick chimneys on the right and between the left bays. It is two storeys high and has three bays, with the left bay being gabled and projecting, and a lean-to on the right. The windows are irregular wooden casements, mostly three-light, with minimal board hoods on brackets over the ground floor windows. There is a board door situated between the right bays. To the left, there are two later blocks, both covered in whitewashed roughcast over brick, each with an old tile roof and a central brick chimney. These blocks are also two storeys high and feature early 20th century barred wooden casements. The central block has moulded eaves and is double fronted, with four-light windows flanking a central two-light window and door. A large inn sign with a painted cock is located to the right of the center. The block to the left is slightly set back and has two bays of irregular casements. The interior has undergone significant alterations but still retains stop-chamfered spine beams and joists in the older section.
