Description
The Feathers Hotel is a historic hotel located in Ludlow, with an early 17th century front that incorporates an earlier core. The building features a timber-frame and plaster construction, with brick elements and a double-depth plain tile roof that has three gables at the front. It has a three-bay plan and stands three storeys high, plus a cellar. The front has a three-window range, with bays that include moulded and carved mullions and transoms, and cast diamond glazing set within quarter braced framing. The second floor jetties out on moulded bressummers supported by enriched consoles, featuring a larger bay to the left and enriched quarter bracing. The three gables have an arch motif, with enriched barge boards and pendants.
The central entrance is located in a porch with enriched pillars and consoles that support a first-floor balcony adorned with pierced spot-balusters. The entrance features a 17th century studded plank door in an enriched case, complete with an overlight. This entrance is flanked by 20th century bays on one side and chevron braced panels with casements on the other, all beneath a moulded bressummer on the first floor. The right return of the building continues the main features of the front. A passageway leads to the rear, showcasing restored studding with a passing brace, and provides access to a yard, along with a 20th century entrance and 19th and 20th century range.
Inside, the ground floor room to the right of the entrance features panelling, a mantelpiece, and wall paintings. The first-floor rooms also have panelling, plaster ceilings, and overmantels, with much exposed timber-framing and ceiling beams. The building includes a firemark.
