Description
Number 55, known as Darlington House, along with Numbers 57 and 59, features a garden wall in front of all three properties. This terrace, originally called Gloucester Place, was built in 1817 and is constructed of stucco. It has a parapet and a slate mansard roof with half-hipped ends. The buildings rise four storeys, including an attic and basement.
Each house has an arched porch with open pediments supported by Tuscan columns, a traceried fanlight, and panelled doors. They also feature sash windows with glazing bars and segmental bowed bay windows made of sashes with glazing bars on each floor. Number 55 has a three-storeyed canted bay window with sashes that do not have glazing bars, replacing the original bowed window. The properties include square-roofed dormers with sash windows that have glazing bars.
There is a flight of steps leading to each doorway, accompanied by iron railings with turned newels. The terrace is elevated above the road, with gardens set on a red brick terrace wall topped with iron railings featuring arrow-head shafts.
