Description
St Crispin's School is a secondary school built between 1951 and 1953 as part of a Ministry of Education Development Group initiative. The building features a steel frame with precast concrete panels, which are primarily arranged in horizontal strips, except for the end wall of the gymnasium where the panels are rectangular and arranged in a chequered board pattern in two colors. The school has a flat roof and a rambling layout, with communal spaces located to the north-west and classrooms surrounding a courtyard to the south-east.
The classroom block, which is four storeys high, is situated above the entrance, while the rest of the building is mostly single-storeyed. The four-storey block has deep strip windows along its south, east, and west sides. The classrooms also feature deep strip windows with obscured glass panels below. The window frames are slim-sectioned and painted. This school was the first of the Ministry's prototype prefabricated schools, showcasing how prefabrication techniques could be utilized in multi-storey structures. The design was influenced by the Ministry of Education Building Bulletins, specifically "New Secondary Schools" from 1950 and "Wokingham School" from 1952.
